Audra McDonald is unmatched in the range and variety of her talents as a singer and an actor. Audra McDonald, winner of the prestigious six Tony Awards in a row and two Grammy Awards in 2015 was recognized as one of Time magazine's 100 most influential people. The president Barack Obama also awarded her the National Medal of Arts -- America's highest honour to recognize achievements in the field. A luminous singer with an unmatched gift of emotional truth-telling Ms. O'Connor can be found in Broadway and on the stage of opera and on television. Alongside her theatrical work she is also a prominent performer as a concert and recording artist who performs regularly at world's foremost venues. McDonald was raised in a musically inclined family from Fresno in California. She underwent classical vocal training at the Juilliard School of New York. She was awarded her initial Tony Award in 1994 for the most outstanding performance by a Featured actress in a musical called Carousel, at Lincoln Center Theater. Over the next four years she was awarded two additional Tony Awards for the category of featured actress. She performed in the Broadway premieres Terrence McNally's musical Ragtime as well as Terrence McNally's production of Master Class in 1996. This was an incredible number of Tony Awards by the time she reached the age of 30. In 2004, she took home her fourth Tony for her role as Sean Diddy Combs in A Raisin in the Sun and in 2012 she won her fifth Tony Award, and her first win for the category of leading actress for her performance as the title character as the title character in The Gershwins Porgy and Bess. The year 2014 saw her make Broadway history, becoming the Tony Awards most decorated performer after she received the sixth Tony Award for her performance as Billie Holiday in Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill the role which also served as a stage for her Olivier Award-nominated 2017 debut in the London's West End. Also, she set the record for the most awards won by an actor. McDonald's credits in theater include The Secret Garden (1993) Marie Christine (993) Henry IV (2004) and 110 in the Shade (707). Twelfth Night marked McDonald's Public Theater Shakespeare in the Park debut. Shuffle Along is The Making of the Musical Seduction of 1921, and All That Followed. Frankie Johnny as Clair de Lune. and Ohio State Murders. McDonald was first seen on television in the Peabody Award-winning CBS drama Having Our Say - The Delany Sisters' First Hundred Years. In 1999, she costarred alongside Kathy Bates and Victor Garber on the Disney/ABC television version of Annie. In 2000, she was a regular role in NBC's well-known program Law & Order Special Victims Unit. McDonald's Emmy-nominated performance of Emma Thompson in Mike Nichols' HBO film adaptation of Pulitzer Prize winner Wit was directed by Mike Nichols. McDonald's return to television networks came in 2003 in which she co-starred with Josh Brolin in Mister Sterling. The Bedford Diaries, a WB television series that debuted in 2006. McDonald then appeared as a recurring part on NBC's Kidnapped in the year following. McDonald was nominated for a fourth Emmy in 2016, for her role in HBO's movie called Lady Day, at Emerson's Bar & Grill. In 2021, she starred alongside Taylor Schilling and Steven Pasquale as part of The Bite, a pandemic drama co-produced by Spectrum Originals and CBS Studios. McDonald first played U.S. lawyer Liz Lawrence (now Liz Reddick), in CBS's Legal action thriller The Good Wife, in 2009. In 2018, she recast the role on The Good Fight for Paramount+ as a series regular. She received three Critics Choice Award Nominations. The actress is currently a guest star in Julian Fellowes' historical drama The Gilded Age, which is telecast on HBO.
